Lion Tom Burke and committee look after the club's suicide awareness programme.

The club members like everybody else, are appalled at the number of suicides occuring in our communities, particularly amongst the young. We feel it incumbent as an organisation whose motto is "We Serve" to do something about the suffering felt by the victims and their families and friends.

To this end we called a Public Meeting in January 2007 in the Ardilaun House Hotel, Taylors Hill, Galway. This meeting, organised in conjuction with the Health Service Executive and the support organisation Aware, had speakers from these groups giving an outline of a programme that has already been proven successful in Canada and in Ireland in reducing the rates of suicide.

We invited Companies, Sports Organisations, and Public Representatives to attend the meeting. The next meeting was scheduled for February 2007 in the Ardilaun House Hotel, Taylors Hill, Galway.  Since then approximately 90 members of the public have participated in the Suicide Awareness Skills Training courses held in Galway.

The most recent training took place in Septemeber 2008. The next session is likely to be scheduled for September 2009.
