The event which is named after a famous Galway character, was inspired by ‘Eric’s Party’ which has been run by Dublin Lions for many years. In its first year COVID restrictions meant that there could be no centralised party, so pizzas, soft drinks and other goodies were delivered to various homeless hostels throughout the city. Brendan Guerin RIP
Brendan Guerin 1930-2021 Galway Lions Club regret to announce the death of Brendan Guerin, a member of the club since its charter in 1972. Brendan served as Treasurer for many years, and was President in 1977-78. He later served as Honorary Auditor, and was an active member of the Visitations Committee until recent years. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the club. Born in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, Brendan attended Castleknock College and was a member of the rugby team which won the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in 1947. Following a Request to join in from The Dublin Lions club who have been hosting a Christmas party for the homeless and those in sheltered accommodation for the past 40 years Galway Lions decided to join in at this year’s event, held a little later on Feb27th. Hot meals were provided to the Peter McVerry Family Hub, The Fairgreen Hostel, Osterley Lodge and Glenoaks winter refuge. In all 92 adults and 31 children were catered for. The hot food comprised hot pizza, potato wedges, cocktail sausages, and a can of Fanta or coke for everybody, plus a small box of chocolates each.
