Brendan Guerin RIP

Brendan Guerin 1930-2021

Galway Lions Club regret to announce the death of Brendan Guerin, a member of the club since its charter in 1972. Brendan served as Treasurer for many years, and was President in 1977-78.  He later served as Honorary Auditor, and was an active member of the Visitations Committee until recent years. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the club.

Born in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, Brendan attended Castleknock College and was a member of the rugby team which won the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in 1947. He joined the then Munster and Leinster Bank from school and served most of his time in Galway and was Manager of AIB, Salthill on his retirement. He then worked in a voluntary capacity as a fundraiser for Galway Hospice for over 20 years.

Brendan joined Galwegians Rugby Club in 1955 and was part of the legendary five in a row League and Cup winning team from 1955-1960. He won a cap for Ireland against Scotland in 1956 and went on to represent Connacht for many years. He served as Galwegians President in 1973-74.

A devoted family man, Brendan was predeceased by his wife Phil, and is survived by his family, Fionnuala, Deirdre, Enda and Shane. May he rest in peace.
