Press Release

Galway Lions Club (a 100% voluntary organisation Charity No.15707)

Help us to help Galwegians in needs this Christmas.

As Christmas approaches there are many members of our community in need of help.  The global pandemic over the past 20 months has put huge extra pressures and strains on many of our fellow citizens and families. Galway Lions Club aims to raise funds to provide Christmas vouchers to over 400 families and individuals in need, who are identified in collaboration with SVP, Simon and Social Services Staff.  We also will be fundraising for various projects that we run during the year.

Over the next 6 weeks we will be running our Annual Radio Auction, Cash Collections at local supermarkets/shopping centres, a November swim and soft toy raffles. We are once again appealing to the businesses and people of Galway to help us to help others.

Radio Auction

The Annual Galway Lions Club Radio Auction on December 3rdwas launched on the Galway Talks with Keith Finnegan show at the Galway Bay FM Studio on November 17th where Keith was joined by Lord Mayor Councillor Colette Connolly, Bishop Brendan Kelly, Auction Project Vice Chair Lion Geraldine Mannion and The President of Galway Lions Club Fergal McAndrew.

The #lionsauction2021 will take place on Friday December 3rd between 9.00 am and 12.00 pm and will be broadcast live on Galway Talks with Keith Finnegan and streamed live on:

Galway Lions are seeking the support of the Business Community, by either making a financial donation or by sponsoring an item that can be auctioned. The Public is being asked to support by bidding for and purchasing the items offered for sale.  Sponsors and donors can receive significant exposure through local media, including Galway Bay FM, during and in the lead up to the auction. The Lions expect to have over 230 items for sale including weekends away, fuel and food vouchers, tickets to sporting events, shopping vouchers and furniture.

You can bid online from 9am on Tuesday November 30th until 12 noon on Friday December 3rd on the auction website at, or on the day by phone on 091-353250 where lines will be manned throughout the show.   Details of items will also be posted on a rolling basis on our Facebook and Twitter accounts from Monday November 22nd.

So, if you want a bargain, a present for Christmas, or just want to help a worthy cause, get your bids in.

Alternatively, if you have something to donate or sponsor contact the club in advance at  or any Lions Club Member.

Lions Club Collection.

The Lions Club Supermarket Collections are as much part of Christmas in Galway, as Santa Claus and Plum puddings. From the end of November shoppers at our supermarkets are greeted by local men and women vigorously shaking buckets, sporting Santa hats and fluorescent Lions Club jackets!

It is always so amazing that, despite the last-minute dashing and stress for shoppers, they always take the time to dig deep in their purses, wallets and cards for a much needed and appreciated donation.  The donation is always accompanied by kind comments such as ‘ye do great work’, ‘it’s important to remember those in need at this time of the year’. Unbelievably, year on year this effort yields circa €18,000 which is a vital contribution to funding club projects.

The cash collections will be evident throughout the city from the last weekend of November and the first two weekends of December, and your support as always would be most welcome.

Given the restrictions we were faced with relative to our cash collections at supermarkets last year and thankfully to a lesser degree this year, we have looked to Idonate to support our traditional cash collection fundraising efforts.

We have once again secured a fantastic prize offering of hotel break this year in Delphi 4* Resort hotel and spa as part of our Galway Lion Club Christmas Appeal via Idonates Online Raffle Fundraiser (

The link will be widely circulated and accessible on our Web or Facebook pages (below). The Draw will take place on Dec 18th and the winner will be notified by email.

Galway Lions President Fergal McAndrew said:

The Lions Club is Community based organisation working to help those families in need.  We work closely with many local organisations on a joint community basis – sourcing donations from businesses, working with other local charities and organisations and all our volunteers come from a wide spectrum of the local community in Galway”

Our joint wish is to give that extra little bit of help that might just make the difference and maybe help families in these tough challenging times. All of this is possible through the generosity of the people and businesses of Galway – in particular”

Fergal thanked Peter Murphy Electrical who sponsored the software for the Auction, Galway Bay FM and Keith Finnegan in particular, who has been a great supported and advocate for the club over many years.

All the proceeds of our fund raising together with any donations received will go to directly to providing assistance to people in our community who need extra support at Christmas and new Year.
